Choose the Best Glasses Frames for Your Face

Last updated 7 months ago

If you’re heading to the ophthalmologist and feel nervous about needing glasses, worry no more. With such a wide variety of eyeglass frames available, no one should be uncomfortable about how he or she looks in glasses. If you’re unsure about what kind of eyeglass frames would look best on your face, take a look at this guide.  As a rule of thumb, the shape of the frame should contrast with the shape of your face, and the size of the frame and the size of your face should be of the same scale.

  • Square Faces
If you’ve got a strong jaw and broad forehead, you’ll want to soften your angular lines. Steer clear of square-shaped frames, and choose curved frames such as round, oval and aviator styles.
  • Oval Faces
If your face is oval, lucky you! Oval faces have balanced proportions, which explain why most frames shapes work for people whose faces are oval. Your goal is to maintain that proportional balance, so choose frames that are at least as wide as the widest part of your face and avoid frames that are overly large.
  • Round Faces
If you’ve got a rounded chin and full cheeks, avoid round frames. Instead, aim for square, angular or aviator styles that can make your face appear longer and thinner.
  • Oblong Faces
An oblong face is longer than it is wide, so your goal is to make your face appear shorter and more balanced. Try shapes that have more depth than width, such as aviator, round, deep rectangular, or square.  A frame with a low bridge can shorten the appearance of a long nose.
  • Heart Faces
If your broad forehead and wide cheekbones narrow down to a smaller chin, you’ll look best in frames that are wider at the bottom than the top.  Your goal is to minimize your temple width and draw the eye to the lower half of your face. Geometric and round frames are shapes to consider.
  • Triangular Faces
If you have a narrow forehead that widens at the chin, you’ll want to draw the eye to the top of your face.  Look for frames that provide visual weight at the top via color accents and detailing.  Consider semi-rimless, geometric or cat eye frames, and avoid narrow frames.
